Mercy and Grace

What’s the difference between Mercy and Grace? In short, Mercy is not receiving what we rightly deserve, and grace is receiving what we do not deserve. Please consider the following:

Over 2000 years ago, a crowd gathered before the judgment seat of a Roman governor. The governor tried three times not to judge this criminal. First he tried to pass the buck and put this burden on another, when that failed he tried to release him as an act of good will, but the crowd chose to have a murderer released. Lastly the governor tried to appease the crowd and have this man beaten without mercy. The crowd not satisfied with the governor’s actions cried out for the man to be executed in an unmerciful way. The religious leaders of the day not only participated but lead the chat to have him killed. What was his Crime you might wonder? The official court record shows that this man was guilty of insurrection, as he claimed to be a king, the religious leaders found him guilty of blasphemy as he claimed to be God, the sent Messiah that they had been waiting generations for. So we call the Friday before Easter Good Friday, what is so good about it? An innocent man was put on the cross to die; it wasn’t like the man was Adolf Hitler, or some other psychopath that had killed without mercy. So what is so good about it? The man was Jesus, the Son of God. Those that do not believe that title might call him a lunatic, and rightly so if He wasn’t who He said He was. Others might call Him a liar, that He was just trying to feel important in a crazy world. Neither of these charges are worthy of a death penalty, so I ask again why do we call this “Good Friday”? I call Him Lord, He went willing to the cross to die to take the penalty for my sins. Without belief and trust in Him you will have to take your own punishment, I decided to declare myself guilty of sinning against a righteous and Holy God now and throw myself upon the mercy of the court, what about you? Mercy is waiting for you for the asking.
